Facility- Schoolhouse Learning Center, Vermont imageThe Schoolhouse is located in a beautiful remodeled barn. In addition to spacious classrooms, it has a community room, a full-sized gymnasium, library, office, and an afterschool program room. The school building has state-of-the-art constant ventilation through an air-to-air heat exchanger, radiant heating to ensure warm floors, and plenty of efficient, natural lighting. There are spaces outside of each classroom for small gardens that the students plant in the spring and harvest in the fall.

Outside our walls, the campus includes 28 acres of beautiful open fields, wetlands, and three ponds. These provide opportunities for lots of observing and hands-on learning in nature. Among the visitors in our wetlands are herons, egrets, ducks, geese, killdeer, red-winged blackbirds, voles, muskrats, turtles, deer and more.

Our front playground, purchased in part through fundraising efforts of the Schoolhouse community and a grant from the Ronald McDonald House, features a climbing web, eight swings, a wooden play structure, monkey bars and a tire swing. We also have a tree fort that was built by students at the Center for Technology, Essex. Finally, our middle schoolers have built boardwalks to provide better access to our wetlands for study and exploration.

Story Time has its own outdoor play space which includes swings, a climbing structure, a sandbox and a large garden area.

Through our partnership with Bread and Butter Farm, students also spend meaningful time learning at the farm and in the surrounding forestland ecosystem.

Outdoor play and exploration is an important part of The Schoolhouse day. Our diverse natural setting and outdoor playground give children a wealth of opportunities to be creative as they play outside.

The Schoolhouse facility is available for rent by non-profits, recreational groups and individuals.
