Schoolhouse families pitch in to raise scholarship funds and feed the hungry

The Schoolhouse community comes together twice a year to raise funds for our scholarship program, so that we can support our commitment to socio-economic diversity. This fall we organized our second community oriented servathon, where Schoolhouse families were sponsored to harvest produce on Intervale farms for distribution to local food shelves and soup kitchens. Its a win-win-win! Farmers get help at a time when labor is scarce, food that might otherwise go to waste is harvested for people who need it, and The Schoolhouse scholarship fund gets a major boost.

On October 10th, a hardy group of kids, parents and teachers braved a cold, wet morning to glean the fields. As they did last yar, the Intervale organizers praised our teams hard, focused work. They commented that our crew was the most efficient of all the gleaners they worked with! Together we harvested two types of kale, carrots, and eggplant, bringing in a grand total of 1,500 lb. of produce. Over $6,000 was raised for the Schoolhouse scholarship fund.
