The Alpha2/Omegas share their mural depicting the 5 layers of the atmosphere.

Joni AvRutick, Alpa 2/Omega (1st/2nd grade) teacher extraordinaire, completed her second year of training in UVM’s Satellite, Weather, Atmosphere, and Climate (SWAC) program. The program is spearheaded by Dr. Lesley-Ann Dupigny-Giroux, the Vermont state climatologist and a professor at UVM and, according to the SWAC website, is intended to foster“climate knowledge and geospatial skills for all.”

Each year SWAC’s elementary through high school-level teachers teachers participate in a 3-day intensive summer course at UVM and follow up their studies with monthly sessions throughout the school year.

Joni, one of the few elementary-level teachers in the program, plans to share some of her work at Schoolhouse with her classmates in the SWAC program. This year Dr. Lesley-Ann will be working with freshman college students to come in and present on weather-related topics to the students here at The Schoolhouse!
