Each class has Spanish two times a week and Music once a week. Older children have Current Events once a week. In addition to daily recess, Physical Education occurs once or twice a week.
Opening and Closing Circles: Each day begins and ends with an all-school circle. These circles provide opportunities for teachers to take attendance, to share information and stories, and to acknowledge accomplishments and birthdays. We welcome parents, siblings, caregivers, friends and extended family members to join in these circles (8:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.).
Recess: Because we believe strongly in the value of unstructured play, we provide two recesses daily. As long it is not below zero or raining, at least one recess will be outside. During the depth of winter, we have an “inside recess” in the afternoon.
Jobs and Job Partners: Each student takes responsibility for maintaining the space around them by doing jobs each day. We pair older students with younger students as job partners. Besides doing daily jobs together, older job partners are responsible for making sure younger job partners are ready for recess each day.
Reading Partners: Generally, older students are paired with younger students as reading partners weekly. Older students both read to younger partners and (when appropriate) listen to younger students read to them. They may also do interactive language arts activities together.
Afterschool: The Afterschool Program at The Schoolhouse runs from 2:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. The afternoon typically includes time outdoors, time in the gym, games and crafts. Students have time for homework as needed. All students participating receive a healthful snack.
Parents have the option of signing a contract to have their child(ren) attend every day or only on certain designated days. They also have the option of buying “drops” in specific quantities so that they can choose to have their child(ren) attend as needed (Schoolhouse students only). The afterschool program is open to students who attend the Schoolhouse elementary and middle school programs, and to students from other area schools.
Playdays: During teacher in-service days and parent-teacher conferences (whole and half days off), the afterschool program holds playdays, providing supervision and some structured play for students enrolled at Schoolhouse. Parents are asked to sign up in advance if they would like their child(ren) to attend on specific dates.
